About George

George Mastin, NMH specialist mentor, outdoors

I enjoy offering students the support and compassion they need to manage their mental health alongside their academic commitments. I'm wholeheartedly a people person, and I use my innate compassion to build genuine relationships through which guidance can be offered.

I qualified with a first-class degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy. I now practise psychotherapy using a person-centred approach, which has informed my ability to work with students non-clinically while still using the same basic tenets of honesty, empathy, and refraining from judgement.

My work as an NHS coach has given me the ability to support goal-oriented outcomes despite the natural setbacks that occur. Similarly, I help students fulfil their academic obligations, so they can ultimately complete their degree and graduate, by working with them through the persistent obstacles of life. I appreciate that in poor mental health, studying towards exams is the last thing anyone might care about, but by taking things slow, one thing at a time, I can offer the support and guidance needed to stay on track.

How we'll work together

More than anything, I want to support students and make sure they are living well. Sometimes this is going to mean purely focusing on their mental health, making sure they're safe, and that they know what resources are available to them. Other times it'll be purely around overcoming exam and assignment obstacles, making sure they are able to fulfil their commitments despite any ongoing difficulties. Often it's simply a listening ear, helping students slow things down, create practical plans, and avert any negative outcomes.

Remote

We can work together online or in person, to a schedule that suits us both. Sometimes that can mean hours spent together working towards a big assignment, or simply remote check-ins, just to calm any anxieties.

In person

The sessions are entirely student-led, meaning we can work on or talk about anything they wish. However, as a specialist mentor, I'll maintain oversight of a student's wellbeing and academic needs, to make sure they get the best support possible at all times.
